I met with Danyel Fisher of MSR yesterday. He demoed a system he's developed which visualizes the usage of Microsoft's mapping service. In the example below, the brighter the area, the more users have been looking at that mart of the map. Danyel's paper is here.
There is something similar for World Wind servers (but in low resolution - just the global scale, not city or street level as in VE)). http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/World_Wind_server_usage
You can even use it as an add-on.

It would be interesting to normalize this data by population size. Per capita, are there areas of the country that are using this service more than others?
