This weekend, Silent Hill was shown on 2, 925 screens, The Sentinel on 2, 819 and American Dreamz on 1, 500 (according to the most excellent BoxOfficeMojo). It is not surprising, then, that the commentary in the blogosphere (the volume of posts about the different films) shows a very similar relative volume to the number of screens:
The point is, of course, that when analysing buzz on movies it is important - for certain types of analysis - to normalize by the number of screens. If, for example, we found that a film generated proportionally more buzz than another based on screen numbers, we might conclude that it was potentially a more succesful movie - should more screens be opened up?
