I've posted before on visualizing the blogosphere. Anjo Anjewierden (recommended reading) blogs about drawing the conversation graph for linked discussion in the blogosphere. Conversations are actually graphs (which Anjo correctly captures), not trees (which are a little easier to deal with). Anjo mentions a paper on the topic. The 2nd Workshop on Weblogging Ecosystems also had a paper that addressed conversation structure, and what it tells us about the role of the blogger. Below are two illustrations of conversations, the first from Anyo, and the second from Nakajima.
Conversation visualization is another way in which the blogosphere can potentially trump Web 1.0 with innovation in the search/browsing interface.
