They really should tattoo point #1 on every analyst in creation. I run market-facing analytics for a reasonably large company.

While I like playing with technology, WE ARE NOT BIG DATA. When you can pull every transaction in the company for a quarter and get them into a single MS access DB, there's no real reason to break out the heavy artillery.

Doesn't mean we don't have patterns, doesn't mean we don't do real statistical work (which we do, and for which we are richly rewarded)... just means we don't need Hadoop...
