The BBC has an interesting article describing how the British flew Spitfires harnessed with stereoscopic cameras over Nazi occupied Europe to spot V rocket launch and manufacturing facilities. In the video accompanying the article you can see some modern day reconstructions from the original image pairs.
In a related story, Todd tells me that the Boeing plant up here in Seattle employed camouflage to hide from prying eyes. The dark area in the image below is a large sheet with an image of a Seattle neighborhood on it. Notice the bridge and river in the foreground for scale.
So, if the Brits had flown over this they would have been very confused to find no 3d relief from this 2d image.
