While the open data movement is doing a great job of providing access to currated, well managed data sets, the backcountry areas of the web are alive with rich assets that need a little more work to surface. In the video below, I show an example of UK sea level time series data being exposed in d8taplex and how the visual manipulation of the data can help with the extraction of the gold.
The data has been discovered via crawling the web, interpreting non-trivial tabular formats in excel files and finally presenting the data in an interactive graph. Because this data is not currated, even after it has been acquired by the data engine, it requires a little tenacity on the part of the user.
