perfect choice of title, & a fun visualization. i think a logarithmic scale might be more informative though.

Matthew, I have not read the Watchmen graphic novel, given which I would naively have spelled the names of two of the characters Night Owl and Silk Specter, which is what occurred to me looking at the graph you generated. (Re: "spectre": this is America, dammit!)
So I tested BlogPulse. It does NOT lemmatize "spectre" and "specter" or "night" and "nite." It appears that one in eight bloggers use "specter" and one in four use "night." I can only wonder about other spelling variants or misspellings. In any case, the pulse accuracy is reduced.
Here's my query:
http://blogpulse.com/trend?query1=%22silk+specter%22+watchmen&query2=%22silk+spectre%22+watchmen&query3=%22night+owl%22+watchmen&query4=%22nite+owl%22+watchmen&days=30&x=28&y=11
