Ping Liang at VisualSize.com pointed me to a new comparison they have done with Photosynth (see my earlier post on VisualSize). It is interesting to see Photosynth used as a yardstick in this space, however I’m not convinced by the comparison. The number of photos linked in a group is certainly a necessary statistic, but the quality of the linking is also important. In addition, the UI – which leads to an exploration of use cases – is far more sophisticated in Photosynth.
Nevertheless, VisualSize is still showing pluck and worth tracking.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the post. You are correct that we have work to do on the UI, however, the comparison shows that our underlying core algorithm for calculating the 3D coordinates of the photos is a lot more robust than Photosynth. As for quality of the link, if Photosynth fails to link photos that should be linked, its quality is zero.
On the other hand, the "quality" of our linking is very high; enough to build 3D models from point clouds. See our 3D model demos here using the same underlying algorithm to recover 3D coordinates http://www.visualsize.com/3ddemo/
