Race and Gender in the Election
A quick look at BlogPulse paints an interesting picture regarding the focus of attention on race and gender in the election (thanks to Jason Adams for improving the queries!).
Note that variations on these queries (e.g. "first female US president") don't yield any significant extra volume. Note also how the above differs from the trends for the names of the candidates.





"first african american president" gives about 2.7k results on Google blog search versus 17.6k for "first black president". I wonder if that would skew it even more (and, of course, the google search doesn't take time into account).

It's also interesting to see the use of the terms over time via Topix.
1) http://www.topix.net/search/article?q=%22first+african+american+president%22
First African American President, note the spike in October and one the other day.

15,152 hits back to May, 2007
Most notable spike, in the past couple of days.
3) First Female President
5749 hits.

3807 hits. Spike in June
Since Topix offers case sensitive searching you will likely get diff results depending on precise spelling.
