Could someone explain what this statement and confusing photo means? Never heard of Live Labs or PhotoSynth so this is pretty esoteric.

It would probably be helpful if there were some links going on here, wouldn't there? Here's a link to a Photosynth demo given at the TED Conference this year. Photosynth is an app that analyses digital photographs to build a three-dimensional model of a photographed object. Presumably, this post indicates that the BBC is providing some collections. I'd like to find out more info, though.
Ah, here we go. According to the Photosynth Lab blog, the BBC collections should be available here.
*sigh* Typepad is apparently eating all hrefs. That bites (but hey, at least I previewed!). Here are the URLs of the relevant links:

I can't wait to see it available with more sources. It's just amazing.

Jake, I missed putting in the appropriate link (thanks Ken for the comprehensive list!). That being said, a) there are category links for both livelabs and photosynth on this blog and b) a presentation at TED is probably not a good indicator of an esoteric technology.
Vincent, sounds like you are as excited as I am about this stuff - it is a fundamentally new capability for photographic data.

Indeed, I love the fact that it might, in the future, rely on user-submitted digital photos. It could lead to new ways to collaborate, new navigation and if I take the example of the cathedral, new ways to tell stories.
When I think about the work of Jonathan Harris (wefeelfine or Universe) I'd love to see that applied to Photosynth. I can imagine the power of mixing this with comments/descriptions analysis on Flickr for example.
In the future maybe it could be a way to review hotels, travel or even products.
