Levon Lloyd, Prachi Kaulgud and Steven Skiena have a paper at the upcoming AAAI Symposium on Computer Assisted Analysis of Weblogs entitled Newspapers vs Blogs: Who Gets the Scoop? The paper is an interesting read, and contains some graphs comparing terms in news media and blogs - it's great to see some real analysis of this issue.
The paper lead me to a number of search engines based on their Lydia platform, which appears to be a text analysis system for data stream that, at least, recognizes named entities (person names, locations, etc.): TextMap and TextBlg.
The system provides a number of analyses and visualizations, including a heat map indicating which parts of the country talk about a specific topic. The example below indicates where in the country, news media is talking about the topic India.
