Sometimes, in researching material for a post, one discovers that someone else has already written just what you wanted. So I'm pointing to PR meets the WWW and their post on the controversial Edelman/Technorati survey. It presents a reasonable list of posting on this topic. Constantin has previously posted some great comments on methodology and transparency in (blog) surveys of this type.
Reading some of the posts on the Edelman/Technorati survey, there is some sense of forgiveness due to the fact that the space is in its infancy. Robert French, for example, has this to say:
Personally, I applaud your efforts. Regardless of the outcome, it is laudable that this survey was undertaken. Further, I hope you are planning future surveys. A repeat of this survey - same sample, same questions - down the road will also add to the ability to determine its value.
